How Held Items Affect Stats

Held items can dramatically change a Pokemon's effectiveness in battle. Some items directly modify stats, while others boost move power or provide utility. Understanding item interactions is essential for competitive team building.

Damage-Boosting Items

These items don't change the displayed stat but boost move power:

  • Life Orb: +30% move power, costs 10% HP per attack
  • Expert Belt: +20% power on super-effective moves
  • Type-boosting items (Black Belt, Charcoal, etc.): +20% to matching type moves
  • Plates (Flame Plate, Splash Plate, etc.): +20% to matching type, changes Arceus form
  • Mega Stones: Enables Mega Evolution, completely changes base stats

Item Strategy Guide

When to Use Choice Items

Choice items (Band, Specs, Scarf) provide a massive 50% boost to one stat, making them the strongest stat-boosting items. However, they lock the user into the first move used. They're best on:

  • Pokemon that only need one or two moves to do their job
  • Late-game cleaners that can sweep with a single move
  • Scarf users that need the Speed boost to outspeed threats

Eviolite: The Budget Wall

Eviolite gives a 50% boost to both Defense and Special Defense, but only works on Pokemon that haven't fully evolved. This makes unevolved Pokemon surprisingly bulky:

  • Chansey with Eviolite is even tankier than Blissey on the special side
  • Dusclops with Eviolite rivals Dusknoir in bulk
  • Porygon2 with Eviolite out-tanks Porygon-Z

Species-Specific Items

Some items only work on specific Pokemon but provide enormous boosts:

  • Light Ball (Pikachu): Doubles both Attack and Sp. Atk, making Pikachu hit like Raichu
  • Thick Club (Marowak): Doubles Attack, making Marowak one of the hardest physical hitters
  • Soul Dew (Latias/Latios): 50% boost to both special stats

Item-Ability Interactions

Item effects stack multiplicatively with ability modifiers. Understanding these interactions is key to maximizing damage output:

AbilityItemCombined Effect
Huge Power (x2 Atk)Choice Band (x1.5 Atk)x3.0 Attack total
Pure Power (x2 Atk)Life Orb (x1.3 dmg)x2.6 Attack + 30% damage
Guts (x1.5 when status)Toxic Orbx1.5 Attack + immune to other statuses
Quick Feet (x1.5 Spe when status)Toxic Orbx1.5 Speed + status immunity
Adaptability (x2 STAB)Choice Specs (x1.5 SpA)x3.0 Sp. Atk + x2 STAB

These calculations follow the item modifier logic from the smogon/damage-calc open-source project, which is the same engine used by the official Pokemon Showdown damage calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do Choice items affect stats?

Choice Band multiplies Attack by 1.5, Choice Specs multiplies Special Attack by 1.5, and Choice Scarf multiplies Speed by 1.5. The trade-off is that the Pokemon is locked into the first move it uses. These are the strongest stat-boosting items in the game, providing a 50% boost.

Does Eviolite work on fully evolved Pokemon?

No. Eviolite only works on Pokemon that can still evolve. It multiplies both Defense and Special Defense by 1.5. This makes unevolved Pokemon like Chansey, Porygon2, and Dusclops surprisingly bulky — sometimes outperforming their evolved forms.

What is the strongest item for Pikachu?

Light Ball is exclusive to Pikachu and doubles both Attack and Special Attack (x2.0 multiplier). This makes Pikachu hit as hard as many fully evolved Pokemon. Without Light Ball, Pikachu's base stats are too low for competitive play.

How does Thick Club work?

Thick Club is exclusive to Cubone and Marowak. It doubles their Attack stat (x2.0 multiplier). Combined with Marowak's base 80 Attack, this gives an effective Attack of 160+ — comparable to top-tier physical attackers. Alolan Marowak also benefits from Thick Club.

Do Mega Stones change base stats?

Yes. When a Pokemon Mega Evolves, its base stats are completely replaced with the Mega Evolution's base stats. For example, regular Garchomp has 108/130/95/120/85/102, but Mega Garchomp has 108/170/115/120/95/92. The stat change happens before IVs, EVs, and natures are applied.

How do items interact with abilities?

Item effects stack multiplicatively with ability modifiers. For example, a Pokemon with Huge Power (x2 Attack) holding a Choice Band (x1.5 Attack) gets a total x3 Attack multiplier. However, some abilities like Klutz prevent item use entirely, and the move Knock Off removes held items.
