Pokemon EV Calculator
Plan your EV (Effort Value) training. Set your target stats and the calculator will tell you exactly how many EVs you need to invest in each stat to reach your goals.
EV Training Plan
EV Training Tips
- • Each Pokemon can have a maximum of 510 total EVs, with max 252 per stat.
- • 4 EVs = +1 stat point at level 100 (or +0.5 at level 50).
- • Use Power Items (+8 EV per KO) or Macho Brace (2x EV) to speed up training.
- • Pokerus doubles EV gain — combine with Power Items for maximum efficiency.
- • Use Vitamins (Protein, Iron, etc.) for the first 100 EVs per stat in Gen 8+.
- • Feather items give +1 EV each with no cap in Gen 5-7.
What Are EVs (Effort Values)?
EVs, or Effort Values, are hidden points that a Pokemon gains by defeating other Pokemon in battle. Each Pokemon species gives specific EVs when defeated. For example, defeating a Golem grants 2 Defense EVs. A Pokemon can accumulate up to 510 total EVs, with a maximum of 252 in any single stat.
Every 4 EVs in a stat translate to +1 stat point at level 100 (or +0.5 at level 50). This means 252 EVs in Attack add 63 Attack points at level 100 — a massive boost that can double a Pokemon's attacking power.
Serebii's Official EV Rules
- • 4 EVs = +1 stat point at level 100
- • Max 252 EVs per stat (changed from 255 in Gen 6)
- • Max 510 EVs total across all six stats
- • Standard competitive spread: 252 / 252 / 4 = 508 EVs (2 wasted)
- • EVs are earned by defeating specific Pokemon species in battle
- • EXP Share also distributes EVs (Gen 6+), so be careful when leveling
Standard EV Spreads
Physical Sweeper
252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Maximize damage and speed for fast physical attackers
Special Sweeper
252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Same concept but for special attackers
Mixed Wall
252 HP / 128 Def / 128 SpD
Balanced defensive spread for tanks
Bulky Attacker
252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SpD
Survivability + damage for slow powerhouses
Fast EV Training Methods
- Power Items: Each Power Item adds +8 EVs per KO (Power Bracer = Atk, Power Belt = Def, etc.)
- Macho Brace: Doubles all EV gains but halves speed in battle
- Pokerus: A rare virus that doubles EV gains — stacks with Power Items
- Vitamins: Protein, Iron, Calcium, Zinc, HP Up, Carbos — each gives 10 EVs (up to 100 per stat in Gen 8+)
- Feathers: Health Feather, Muscle Feather, etc. — give 1 EV each with no cap
- Auto-battling: In Gen 9, sending Pokemon to auto-battle grants EVs efficiently
EV Training by Generation
Efficient EV training spots vary by game. Here are the most commonly used locations, following Smogon's EV training manual:
| Game | EV Target | Best Spot | EVs per KO |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gen 6 (ORAS) | Attack | Horde of Weepinbell (Route 120) | ~50 with Power Bracer + Pokerus |
| Gen 7 (USUM) | Speed | SOS chain of Ledian (Route 10) | ~50 with Power Anklet + Pokerus |
| Gen 8 (SwSh) | Any | Gigantamax raids + Vitamins | 10 per Vitamin (up to 100) |
| Gen 9 (SV) | Any | Auto-battles + Tera Raids | Varies; auto-battle is fastest |
Optimal EV Training Strategy
- Use 10 Vitamins to instantly get 100 EVs in the target stat (Gen 8+)
- Equip the matching Power Item for the remaining 152 EVs
- Find a horde/SOS chain/auto-battle spot that gives the right EVs
- If you have Pokerus, each KO doubles — so you need half as many battles
- Use Feathers for fine-tuning the last few EVs (e.g., the +4 in a third stat)
- Verify your spread on the summary screen's EV graph (press Y)
Resetting EVs
If you make a mistake in EV training, you can reset using specific berries:
- Pomeg Berry — removes HP EVs
- Kelpsy Berry — removes Attack EVs
- Qualot Berry — removes Defense EVs
- Hondew Berry — removes Special Attack EVs
- Grepa Berry — removes Special Defense EVs
- Tamato Berry — removes Speed EVs
In Gen 9, you can also use EV-lowering items or simply reset via the PC box friendship mechanic.
