IV Results Summary
What Are IVs (Individual Values)?
IVs, or Individual Values, are hidden numbers that determine a Pokemon's potential in each stat. Each of the six stats (HP, Attack, Defense, Special Attack, Special Defense, Speed) has an IV ranging from 0 to 31. A Pokemon with 31 IV in Attack will have a higher Attack stat than one with 0 IV, all else being equal.
IVs are determined when a Pokemon is encountered or hatched and cannot be changed (though Hyper Training in Gen 7+ can effectively max them out). In competitive battling, most players aim for 5-6 perfect IVs (31 in each relevant stat).
How to Check IVs
- Select your Pokemon species in the calculator above.
- Set the correct level (check in-game summary screen).
- Choose the nature your Pokemon has.
- Enter the EVs for each stat (use 0 if you haven't trained EVs yet).
- Input the actual stat numbers you see in your Pokemon's summary.
- The calculator will display the IV range for each stat.
Pro Tip: Level 50 Testing
IV calculations are most accurate at higher levels. If possible, temporarily level up your Pokemon to level 50 (using a Battle Tower or similar feature) for the most precise IV readings. The in-game IV Judge feature in modern games can also confirm your results.
IV Impact on Stats
At level 100, each IV point adds exactly 1 point to the corresponding stat (before nature modifiers). At level 50, each IV point adds approximately 0.5 stat points. This means the difference between a 0 IV and 31 IV Pokemon at level 100 is 31 stat points — which can be the difference between a knockout and a survival.
The IV Reverse-Calculation Formula
Our calculator reverse-engineers IVs by rearranging the official stat formula (per Serebii's IV calculator method):
Non-HP stats:
IV = ceil(ceil(Stat ÷ NatureModifier) - 5) × 100 ÷ Level - 2 × Base - floor(EV ÷ 4)
HP:
IV = (HP - Level - 10) × 100 ÷ Level - 2 × Base - floor(EV ÷ 4)
Because the game uses floor() operations at multiple stages, the reverse calculation produces a range rather than a single exact value. At level 100, the range is narrow (often ±1); at lower levels, the range widens. This is why our calculator shows an IV range like "29-31" instead of a single number.
IV Judge & In-Game Checking
Modern Pokemon games include built-in IV checking tools, though they require some progress to unlock:
- Gen 6 (XY/ORAS): Talk to the IV Judge in the Battle Resort/Kiloude City. He rates overall potential and identifies the highest IV stat.
- Gen 7 (SM/USUM): Hatch 20+ eggs, then visit the IV Judge at the Battle Tree. He now explicitly says "Best" for 31 and "No Good" for 0.
- Gen 8 (SwSh): The IV Judge is available in the Battle Tower after winning 6 matches. Win enough battles to unlock the "Judge" function on the PC box.
- Gen 9 (SV): After completing the main story, the IV Judge is unlocked automatically in the PC box. Press the + button while viewing a Pokemon to toggle IV stars.
While the in-game IV Judge confirms results, our calculator is useful when the Judge isn't unlocked yet, or when you need exact ranges for breeding decisions.
Breeding & IV Inheritance
IVs are inherited through breeding. The Destiny Knot item is the most important tool — it guarantees that 5 of the 12 parent IVs are passed down to the child (changed from 3 in Gen 5 to 5 in Gen 6+). The remaining stat is randomly generated (0-31).
Breeding Math with Destiny Knot
Two 5IV parents (missing different stats) + Destiny Knot:
- • 5/6 chance: the missing stat is inherited from a parent (31/31) → 6IV child
- • 1/6 chance: the missing stat is randomly rolled → 1/32 chance of 31
- • Overall odds of a 6IV egg: ~87.3%
Without Destiny Knot, only 3 IVs are inherited — making 6IV offspring extremely rare.
Hyper Training
Starting in Pokemon Sun & Moon (Gen 7), Hyper Training allows you to max out a Pokemon's IVs to 31 using Bottle Caps. This requires the Pokemon to be level 100. Hyper Trained IVs function identically to natural 31 IVs in battle, though they don't affect breeding outcomes.
