What Is Pokemon Showdown?

Pokemon Showdown is the most popular online Pokemon battle simulator. It allows players to build teams with any Pokemon, any moves, and any stat spread, then battle in real-time. The Showdown format is a standardized text format for representing Pokemon sets, used across Showdown, Smogon, and competitive communities. The official damage calculator is available at calc.pokemonshowdown.com, and the underlying calculation engine is open-source on GitHub (smogon/damage-calc).

Showdown Format Explained

Competitive Tiers (Smogon)

Smogon organizes Pokemon into tiers based on usage and power level. Each tier has its own metagame:

OU (OverUsed)

The standard competitive tier. Strong Pokemon that aren't banned.

Ubers

No restrictions — includes legendaries and banned Pokemon.

UU (UnderUsed)

Mid-tier Pokemon that don't see enough OU usage.

VGC (Video Game Championships)

Official doubles format. Level 50, restricted Pokedex.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Pokemon Showdown format?

The Showdown format is a standardized text representation of a Pokemon set, used by Pokemon Showdown (the most popular online battle simulator), Smogon Strategy Dex, and competitive communities worldwide. It includes the species name, held item, ability, level, EVs, nature, IVs, and up to four moves.

How do I import a set from Smogon Strategy Dex?

Go to smogon.com/dex, find your Pokemon, click the "Export" button on the set you want, and paste it into the import box on this page. Click "Import Set" to load the Pokemon with all its stats, EVs, IVs, nature, and moves automatically filled in.

Is this compatible with the official Showdown damage calculator?

Yes. The Showdown format is the same text format used by the official damage calculator at calc.pokemonshowdown.com. You can export sets from our calculator and paste them directly into the Showdown damage calc, or vice versa. The underlying stat formulas and data are based on the same open-source smogon/damage-calc repository.

What level should I use for Showdown battles?

Smogon singles formats use level 100. VGC (Video Game Championships) uses level 50. Pokemon Showdown auto-levels to the appropriate level based on the format you select. Always check the format rules before building your team.

Can I export multiple Pokemon at once?

Yes. In Pokemon Showdown's teambuilder, you can export your entire team (all 6 Pokemon) as a single text block. Paste the entire block into our import box to load and calculate stats for each Pokemon.
